Prime Factorization Vocabulary

CLASS NOTES

FACTOR - a whole number that divides into a nonzero whole number with no remainders.

 Example: factors of 12: 1,2,3,4,6,12 CFU1

COMPOSITE NUMBER - a whole number greater than1 with more than 2 factors.

 Example: 25 is composite because it has 3 factors 1,5 and 25

PRIME NUMBER - a whole number with exactly 2 factors, 1 and the number itself.

The whole numbers 0 and 1 are neither prime nor composite.

PRIME FACTORIZATION - writing a composite number as a product of prime numbers.
